Full Blood Count Test

Full blood count test (FBC test) is a common and useful blood test that can provide a great deal of information about the state of health of an individual. It is actually a panel of tests looking at the blood that can help diagnose or monitor a variety of conditions including infections and anaemia.

A full blood count test is an important component of our patient health screens. Your doctor may recommend a health screen to investigate potential reasons as to why you are not feeling yourself. Do not worry about determining for yourself which, if any, blood test you need. This is something that your doctor will be able to determine and explain during your consultation.

Same day blood tests are provided at all 12 London DocTap clinics. FBC test results are available the same day for appointments before 1pm. One of our doctors will take the time to explain to you what your test results mean and put in place any approprate next steps based on those results.

Why Choose DocTap?

DocTap seek to provide the most convenient, fastest, effective and best value private blood testing service in London. With 12 blood test centres across London and same day appointments available 7 days a week, it has never been easier to book a fbc test. We are proud to partner with The Doctors Laboratory (TDL) which has a worldwide reputation for excellence.

Unlike many blood test clinics, you will see a UK accredited GP who will be able to offer their expert option on what test is most appropriate for you. Your results will also be accompanied by a written analysis of what they mean and what your doctor advises you to do next. Should additional treatment be required, or if you simply wish to discuss the results in more detail, then you can book a 15 minute follow up consultation for only £25. This can either be at any DocTap clinic or over the phone. When booking your follow up consultation you can request to see you original doctor if you wish (subject to their availability).

Should you require a full consulation before deciding to have a fbc test then there may be insufficient time to also take a blood sample in the appointment. In that case you can choose to either go to our walk in laboratory by Oxford Street (£15 phlebotomy fee applies) or to make a second appointment for the doctor to take the bloods.

What is a Full Blood Count Test?

The FBC test is actually a panel of several tests. It is helpful to look at the individual tests to see what they measure and what signs of illness they can detect.

Haemoglobin Test

Haemoglobin test. Haemoglobin (Hb / Hgb) is the oxygen carrying part of the blood. Low levels can indicate anaemia which is a common cause of tiredness.

Mean Cell Volume

Mean cell volume gives a measurement of the average size of the red blood cell. This is increased when the red blood cells are larger than normal, for example in anaemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency or folic acid deficiency. A smaller MCV is when the red blood cells are smaller than normal which can indicate low iron  caused by a restricted diet or internal bleeding.

Platelet Count

Platelet count shows the number of platelets in the blood. High and low levels could indicate inflammation, bleeding or problems with the bone marrow.

White Blood Cell Count

White blood cell count is a count of the infection fighting cells in the blood. This number is then broken down to show the different types of white cell in the blood (see below). Changes in these numbers can show evidence of infection and blood cancers as well as many other conditions.

  • Neutrophils - one of the first lines of defence against bacterial infections. This may be raised in infection.
  • Lymphocytes - can be increased or decreased in viral infections. Levels are also altered in blood cancer such as chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.
  • Basophils - the numbers can be affected in infection and inflammation.
  • Eosinophils can be increased in asthma, allergy and parasitic infections.
  • Monocytes - can be increased in infection, particularly TB as well as blood cancer.

About Anaemia

Anaemia is a common cause of tiredness and can commonly be due to a limited diet, poor absorption or heavy periods. If you suspect that you may be anaemic then please discuss this with the doctor. Iron levels as well as vitamin B12 and folate (another vitamin) need to be checked and these can easily to done at the same time as the complete blood count.
