About Glandular Fever

Glandular fever, which is also known as Infectious Mononucleosis (or mono) in an infection that usually affects teenagers and young adults, although it can occur at any age. 

Symptoms of Glandular Fever

The main symptoms experienced with Glandular Fever are a fever, swelling of glands, sore throat and excessive tiredness. It is possible for the symptoms to last for 2-3 weeks, however the tiredness can go on for many months. 

If you have Glandular Fever it is possible to develop some serious complications therefore if you develop difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing fluids or severe tummy pain it is important to seek urgent medical attention.

The virus that causes Glandular Fever is called the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and survives in the saliva of people infected with the virus. It is then spread through kissing, sneezing or coughing and can be transmitted through sharing unwashed glasses, cups and cutlery.

You can be infectious for several months after having been ill with Glandular Fever. 

Treatment of Glandular Fever

There is no treatment available to get rid of the virus and your body will gradually fight off the infection itself. However you can medication such as pain killers to help ease the symptoms and it is important to drink plenty of fluids to keep well hydrated. 

If you have been diagnosed with Glandular Fever it is important to try and avoid infecting other people but avoiding kissing, and washing kitchen items well after use. 

Once you have had Glandular Fever you usually develop lifelong immunity to the virus.
