Doseage | Allergic Rhinitis 6-11 years : 50 micrograms daily, dose to be sprayed into each nostril 12–17 years: 100 micrograms daily, increased if necessary up to 200 micrograms daily Adult: 100 micrograms daily, increased if necessary up to 200 micrograms daily Nasal Polyps Initially 100 micrograms daily for 5–6 weeks, then increased if necessary to 100 micrograms twice daily |
Side Effects | Some people may experience dryness and irritation of the nose and throat, mild nosebleeds, and unusual tastes and/or smells Systemic absorption may follow nasal administration particularly if high doses are used or if treatment is prolonged. Therefore also consider the side-effects of systemic corticosteroids. |
Warnings | Avoid after nasal surgery (until healing has occurred) Avoid in pulmonary tuberculosis Avoid in the presence of untreated nasal infections |

How do I take Mometasone?
Allergic rhinitis:
Child, 6 - 11 years - 50mcg daily, dose to be sprayed into each nostril
Child, 12-17 years - 100mcg daily, increased to 200mcg daily if needed, sprayed into each nostril; reduced to 50mcg daily once relief obtained
Adult - 100mcg daily, increased to 200mcg daily if needed, sprayed into each nostril; reduced to 50mcg daily once relief obtained
Nasal Polyps:
Adult - Initially 100mcg daily for 5-6w, dose to be sprayed up each nostril; increase if needed to 100mcg twice daily in each nostril; consider alternative treatment if no improvement after a further 5-6w - reduce to the lowest effective dose when control achieved
Side effects of Mometasone
Glaucoma, nasal septal perforation (usually following nose surgery), aggression, hyperactivity, sleep disturbances, anxiety and bronchospasm (particularly in children), dryness, nosebleeds, hypersensitivity reactions, smell and taste disturbances and throat irritation
Things to avoid
Avoid after nasal surgery and lung TB or nasal infections
Mometasone and alcohol
