Amoxicillin is a widely used penicillin antibiotic used in the treatment of a number of bacterial infections.
What is Amoxicillin used to treat?
Amoxicillin is commonly used for respiratory tract/ENT infections. It also has other indications for use such as in UTIs.
How does Amoxicillin work?
Amoxicillin works by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis.
How do I take Amoxicillin?
Amoxicillin comes in oral and intravenous preparations.
The dose depends on indication, adult/child and route of administration.
The usual adult oral dose is 250mg - 500mg 3 times a day.
Side effects of Amoxicillin
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, rash and joint pains.
Less common but more serious side effects include anaphylaxis and angioedema.

Things to avoid
Amoxicillin is a fairly safe drug and has few interactions.
There have been theoretical and anecdotal interactions with Vitamin K antagonists (like warfarin), allopurinol and methotrexate.

Amoxicillin and alcohol
Alcohol should ideally be avoided.
Can I take Amoxicillin when pregnant?
Not known to be harmful.
Amoxicillin and breastfeeding
Trace amount in milk, but appropriate to use.
