How it works
1. BOOK AN APPOINTMENT
2. MEET WITH A DOCTOR
3. RECEIVE YOUR RESULTS
4. FOLLOW UP (OPTIONAL)
* Please note that the lab results are estimates and can vary. Tests taken after 1pm will be classified as the following day for timing purposes. You will receive a written analysis of your results within 1 working day of them being available from the laboratory. It is often possible for the doctor who reviews your results to be the same doctor who requested them. This is considered medical best practice but will add an additional 1 working day to the timings. If you have multiple tests then we shall wait to report on them together unless the first results highlight any reason for concern. Sometimes the preliminary results will determine that additional tests need to be carried out on your sample. If this is the case then your results will take longer. There is no additional charge for this service.
What is Chlamydia
Chlamydia is a type of sexually transmitted infection (STI). It is the most common type of STI in the UK currently and is easily treatable. The infection is caused by a bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis, which is transmitted via infected semen and vaginal fluids. In the majority of people infected with Chlamydia it does not cause any symptoms or can caused symptoms much later after infection.
How do you catch Chlamydia?
Most people catch Chlamydia by having sex with someone who has it. As it is transmitted through infected semen or vaginal fluid. You can catch chlamydia from:
- Having unprotected vaginal, oral or anal sex with an infected person
- Your genitals coming into contact with your partner’s genitals (even if there is no penetration, orgasm or ejaculation)
- Sharing sex toys.
Wearing a condom can help to protect against Chlamydia and other STIs.
Symptoms of Chlamydia
Most people that have Chlamydia have no symptoms or can present with symptoms much later after picking up the infection. It is estimated that 7 in 10 infected women and 5 in 10 infected men do not have any symptoms of the infection. It is therefore vital that regular sexual health screens are completed to allow treatment and to stop further transmission of the infection.
Common symptoms of Chlamydia in women:
- Pain on passing urine
- Vaginal discharge
- Bleeding/Spotting in between periods
- Lower abdominal pain.
Common symptoms of Chlamydia in men:
- Penile discharge
- Pain on passing urine
- Pain at the tip of the penis.
Testing for Chlamydia
It is best to wait 2 weeks after any unprotected intercourse before testing for Chlamydia as testing before this may be falsely negative. It is very easy to test for Chlamydia and either involves a urine sample or a swab being taken from where the infection is suspected e.g vaginal, penile, rectal or oral swabs as appropriate. It is best to not pass urine for 2 hours before the urine sample if this is the test being organised as this gives the most accurate results.
Gonorrhoea can cause similar symptoms to Chlamydia, so this is typically also tested for at the same time. It is often advisable to check for other infections at the same time in which case you may wish to consider a full sexual health screen.
Treatment of Chlamydia
You can reduce your chance of having the infection by using condoms during sex (vaginal, oral or anal sex) or the use of vaginal dams during female oral sex and contact between female genitals. Avoid sharing sex toys, but if you are going to; then to wash them in between use or use new condoms to cover them before sharing.
People who are diagnosed with chlamydia are usually prescribed a course of antibiotics; this maybe for one day or for seven days depending on the circumstances. It is also recommended that sexual partners are tested and treated for the infection to reduce the change of re-infection or spread to other people.
