Antibiotics
Widely used antibiotic, often prescribed as first line treatment for a variety of bacterial infections
Amoxicillin is a widely used penicillin antibiotic used in the treatment of a number of bacterial infections.
Amoxicillin is commonly used for respiratory tract/ENT infections. It also has other indications for use such as in UTIs.
Amoxicillin works by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Amoxicillin comes in oral and intravenous preparations. The dose depends on indication, adult/child and route of administration. The usual adult oral dose is 250mg - 500mg 3 times a day.
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, rash and joint pains.
Less common but more serious side effects include anaphylaxis and angioedema.
Please seek urgent medical attention if you think you are having an allergic reaction (chest tightness, difficulty breathing, swollen tongue, widespread rash or hives, itchiness)
Amoxicillin is a fairly safe drug and has few interactions.
There have been theoretical and anecdotal interactions with Vitamin K antagonists (like warfarin), allopurinol and methotrexate.
