Common STIs explained, from symptoms to testing

HIV

HIV affects the immune system and may cause no symptoms for several years. Testing uses a blood sample, with standard and early-detection options available depending on how recently the possible exposure occurred.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a common bacterial STI that often causes no symptoms. When symptoms occur, they may include unusual discharge or pain when urinating. Testing usually uses a urine or swab sample, including throat or rectal samples depending on the area being tested.

Gonorrhoea

Gonorrhoea is a bacterial STI that can affect the genitals, rectum or throat. It may cause unusual discharge, pain when urinating or no symptoms at all. Testing uses urine or swab samples from the areas being checked.

Herpes

Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus and can cause painful blisters or sores, although symptoms may be mild or absent. A current sore can be tested with a swab, while a blood test can check for a previous infection.

Syphilis

Syphilis is a bacterial STI that develops in stages. It may begin with a painless sore and can later cause a rash, although symptoms are not always noticeable. Syphilis is tested using a blood sample.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that affects the liver and can be passed through sex or infected blood and body fluids. Many people have no symptoms. Blood testing can check for current infection, previous exposure and immunity.

Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is a viral liver infection passed mainly through infected blood, although sexual transmission can occur. It often causes no early symptoms. Blood tests can check for previous exposure and whether the virus is currently present.

Trichomonas

Trichomonas is an STI caused by a parasite. It may cause discharge, irritation or discomfort when urinating, although many people have no symptoms. Testing uses a urine or swab sample.

Choosing an STI test

What is the difference between an STI test and an STD test?

STI and STD are often used interchangeably. STI is now the more commonly used term because someone can have an infection without developing symptoms or disease. The tests are the same whether you search for an STI test or an STD test.

When should I have an STI test?

You may want to test after unprotected sex, when starting a new relationship, if a partner has tested positive or if you develop symptoms. Many STIs cause no noticeable symptoms, so routine screening can also be helpful when you feel well.

Which STI appointment should I choose?

Choose healthcare assistant-led testing for routine or precautionary screening when you know which test you want. Choose GP-led testing if you have symptoms, concerns, recent exposure or are unsure what to test for.

Which STIs can DocTap test for?

DocTap offers tests for HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhoea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, herpes, trichomonas and mycoplasma. Throat and rectal chlamydia and gonorrhoea tests are also available.

What does a full STI screen include?

The four-STI screen includes HIV, syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhoea. The six-STI screen also includes hepatitis B and hepatitis C. The comprehensive screen includes further infections, including trichomonas and mycoplasma. Check the individual test cards for the exact inclusions.

How soon after exposure can I take an STI test?

Testing windows vary by infection. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea tests can be taken from 14 days after exposure, while the standard HIV test can be taken from 45 days. Early HIV testing is available from 10 days. Testing too early can miss an infection, so repeat testing may sometimes be recommended.

Might I need a throat or rectal swab?

Yes. A urine or genital sample does not test every part of the body. Throat or rectal swabs may be relevant depending on the type of sexual contact. A GP can advise what to test for if you are unsure.

Appointments, samples and results

What samples are taken during an STI test?

The sample depends on the infection being tested for and may include blood, urine or a swab. Samples are taken by a trained healthcare assistant or GP, or you will be guided through collecting them yourself.

Do I need to prepare for an STI test?

Most STI tests require no special preparation. For some urine tests, you may be asked not to urinate for at least one hour before your appointment. Follow the instructions provided when you book.

Can I have an STI test during my period?

Yes. You can attend an STI testing appointment during your period. You can also reschedule through your DocTap account if you would feel more comfortable attending at another time.

How quickly will I receive my STI test results?

Selected tests return within four hours at five clinics with on-site laboratories. At our other clinics, most standard results are ready by 6pm the next working day. Some specialist and early-detection tests take longer. The expected turnaround is shown on each test card.

Which London clinics offer four-hour STI results?

Selected four-hour results are available at Canary Wharf, Hammersmith, King’s Cross and Euston, Liverpool Street and Bank, and London Bridge. STI testing is also available at DocTap’s other London clinics, with samples sent to a laboratory for processing.

How accurate are DocTap STI tests?

DocTap uses established laboratory testing methods. Accuracy depends on choosing the correct test, waiting until the relevant testing window has passed and testing the correct sample sites. Testing too early may mean that a repeat test is recommended.

Positive results and treatment

What happens if my STI test is positive?

A GP will explain your result and what happens next. Depending on the infection, DocTap may provide treatment or direct you to a specialist NHS sexual health service. Partner-notification support is also available with your consent. (https://doctap.co.uk/sti-treatment)

Which STIs can DocTap treat?

DocTap provides treatment for several common infections, including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes, mycoplasma and trichomonas. HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B or C require specialist NHS sexual health care. (https://doctap.co.uk/sti-treatment)

Can DocTap treat me if I tested positive elsewhere?

Yes. Book an STI treatment appointment and bring or upload a copy of your laboratory result. A GP will review it and confirm whether DocTap can provide treatment or whether specialist care is required. (https://doctap.co.uk/sti-treatment)

Can DocTap help me notify previous partners?

Yes. Your clinician can discuss confidential partner-notification options with you after a positive result. Partner notification is only arranged with your consent.

Privacy, prices and access

Is private STI testing confidential?

Yes. Your appointment, results and records are stored securely and are not shared with your NHS GP, employer or anyone else without your consent. You will be notified when your results are ready and can view them privately through your DocTap account.

Does DocTap provide home STI testing kits?

No. DocTap provides in-clinic STI testing. Samples are taken by a trained healthcare assistant or GP, or you will be guided through collecting them yourself.

Can I have an STI test anonymously?

Testing is confidential, but it is not anonymous. You must create a DocTap account using your name, date of birth and address. An identification check is completed at the clinic to ensure that your results and any treatment are linked to the correct patient.

Do the displayed STI test prices include all fees?

Yes. The package prices shown on this page include the appointment, listed tests, handling and results. GP-led package prices also include a 15-minute GP consultation. Optional additional tests are charged separately at the prices displayed.

Do I need to be registered with a UK GP?

No. You do not need to be registered with a UK GP or have a referral to book an STI test with DocTap. You must attend one of our London clinics in person.
