When should I get an STI test after exposure?
If you are looking for an STI or STD test after a possible exposure, timing matters: testing too early can miss an infection. The right window depends on what you are testing for. If you have symptoms or are unsure what you need, book a GP appointment for advice.

Which STIs can I test for?
Many STIs cause no symptoms. The right test depends on the infection, how long ago the possible exposure happened and which parts of the body may have been exposed. Use the guides below for more detailed information on symptoms, testing and treatment.
HIV
HIV affects the immune system and may cause no symptoms for several years. Testing uses a blood sample, with standard and early-detection options available depending on how recently the possible exposure occurred.
Chlamydia
Chlamydia is a common bacterial STI that often causes no symptoms. When symptoms occur, they may include unusual discharge or pain when urinating. Testing usually uses a urine or swab sample, including throat or rectal samples depending on the area being tested.
Gonorrhoea
Gonorrhoea is a bacterial STI that can affect the genitals, rectum or throat. It may cause unusual discharge, pain when urinating or no symptoms at all. Testing uses urine or swab samples from the areas being checked.
Herpes
Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus and can cause painful blisters or sores, although symptoms may be mild or absent. A current sore can be tested with a swab, while a blood test can check for a previous infection.
Syphilis
Syphilis is a bacterial STI that develops in stages. It may begin with a painless sore and can later cause a rash, although symptoms are not always noticeable. Syphilis is tested using a blood sample.
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is a viral infection that affects the liver and can be passed through sex or infected blood and body fluids. Many people have no symptoms. Blood testing can check for current infection, previous exposure and immunity.
Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C is a viral liver infection passed mainly through infected blood, although sexual transmission can occur. It often causes no early symptoms. Blood tests can check for previous exposure and whether the virus is currently present.
Trichomonas
Trichomonas is an STI caused by a parasite. It may cause discharge, irritation or discomfort when urinating, although many people have no symptoms. Testing uses a urine or swab sample.

Choosing an STI test
- When should I get tested after possible STI exposure?
Testing windows vary by infection. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea tests can be taken from 14 days after exposure, while the standard HIV test can be taken from 45 days. Early HIV testing is available from 10 days. Testing too early can miss an infection, so repeat testing may sometimes be recommended.

- Which STI test should I choose if I have no symptoms?
If you have no symptoms and know which infections you want to test for, choose a routine healthcare-assistant-led STI test. If the exposure was recent, you are unsure which tests or sample sites are appropriate, or you want clinical advice, book GP-led testing. - How confidential is private STI testing?
Your appointment, results and records are kept private and your results are delivered securely through your DocTap account. Information is only shared with your consent, except where required by law or for serious safety reasons.
- Can I have an STI test during my period?
Yes. You can attend an STI testing appointment during your period. You can also reschedule through your DocTap account if you would feel more comfortable attending at another time.
- Will I need a throat or rectal swab?
Yes. A urine or genital sample does not test every part of the body. Throat or rectal swabs may be relevant depending on the type of sexual contact. A GP can advise what to test for if you are unsure.
- How soon will I receive STI test results?
Selected tests return within four hours at five clinics with on-site laboratories. At our other clinics, most standard results are ready by 6pm the next working day. Some specialist and early-detection tests take longer. The expected turnaround is shown on each test card.
- Can I book a same-day STI test or walk in?
DocTap is appointment-based rather than a walk-in service, although same-day appointments are often available. Book routine testing if you have no symptoms and know what you want to test for, or a GP appointment if you have symptoms, a recent exposure or need advice.
- What happens if an STI test is positive?
