What you should know about chlamydia

What is chlamydia?

Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in the UK, especially in people under 25. It's a bacterial infection that can affect the genitals, throat or rectum. Most people have no symptoms, so testing is often the only way to know.

How is chlamydia passed on?

  • Vaginal, anal or oral sex without a condom
  • Contact with infected semen or vaginal fluid
  • Sharing sex toys that have not been washed or covered with a new condom
  • From a pregnant person to their baby during birth

What are the symptoms of chlamydia?

Most people with chlamydia have no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they can include:

  • Pain or burning when urinating
  • Unusual vaginal or penile discharge
  • Pain in the lower tummy or pelvis
  • Pain or swelling in the testicles
  • Pain during sex
  • Bleeding after sex or between periods
  • Rectal pain, discomfort or discharge

What happens if chlamydia isn't treated?

Chlamydia is easily treated with antibiotics. Left untreated, it can sometimes lead to:

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can affect fertility and increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy
  • Long-term pelvic or testicular pain
  • Painful swelling around the testicles
  • Reactive arthritis, causing joint pain and swelling

When should I get tested and which sample do I need?

Routine chlamydia testing is suitable from 14 days after exposure. Testing earlier may miss an infection. If you have symptoms or a partner has tested positive, choose GP-led testing rather than waiting.

  • Genital exposure: urine sample or genital swab
  • Oral exposure: throat swab
  • Anal exposure: rectal swab
  • Unsure where to test: book a GP appointment

Chlamydia can affect more than one part of the body. Testing only one sample site can miss an infection elsewhere.

Routine or GP-led testing

Which chlamydia test is right for you?

Choose routine testing if you have no symptoms. It checks for chlamydia and gonorrhoea together, or you can choose a wider STI screen. Choose GP-led testing if you have symptoms, need an examination or want advice about when and where to test.

Routine testing

  • Best for: No symptoms and you'd like a routine check.
  • No GP consultation required: A trained healthcare assistant will take your sample.
  • One routine test: Tests for chlamydia and gonorrhoea from 14 days after exposure, using a urine or genital sample. Throat or rectal testing can be added.
  • Results and price: Selected results within 4 hours, delivered securely through your DocTap account. From £74.

GP-led testing

  • Best for: Symptoms, recent exposure, a positive partner or uncertainty about which sample sites need testing.
  • GP consultation: Your GP can assess you and take the samples you need during the same appointment.
  • The right sample sites: Discuss symptoms and exposure, with examination and advice on genital, throat, rectal or broader STI testing.
  • Treatment and follow-up: Your GP can prescribe treatment, arrange follow-up or refer you if a result is positive.

Chlamydia treatment

If your chlamydia test is positive

A GP will review your result and explain what it means. Chlamydia is treated with a short course of antibiotic tablets, which the GP reviewing your result can usually prescribe. They'll also talk to you about letting recent partners know and whether you need to test again.

Reviewing your result
Your GP will go through your result with you, including which part of the body is affected, and advise whether you should test for other STIs.
Antibiotic tablets
Most chlamydia infections are treated with a short course of antibiotic tablets. Take the full course, even if you feel well. Your GP will check the treatment is right for you, including if you're pregnant.
Letting partners know
Partners from the last 6 months, or since your last negative test, should get tested and treated too. With your consent, DocTap can let them know for you, confidentially or anonymously.
Testing again
You won't always need a follow-up test. Your GP may recommend one to check the infection has cleared (sometimes called a "test of cure"), for example if you're pregnant, had a rectal infection or still have symptoms. Many people are also advised to test again around 3 months later, especially if they're under 25.
Avoid passing the infection on
Don't have vaginal, anal or oral sex until you and your partner or partners have finished treatment and your GP has confirmed it's safe.

FAQs

Chlamydia testing FAQs

Answers about when to test, which samples you may need, result times and what happens after a positive result.

Does a chlamydia test also check for gonorrhoea?

Yes. DocTap's routine £74 test checks for both chlamydia and gonorrhoea using a urine sample or genital swab. Throat and rectal samples are separate, and broader STI screens can also include HIV and syphilis.

How soon after exposure should I test for chlamydia?

For routine chlamydia testing, wait at least 14 days after exposure. Testing earlier can miss an infection. If you have symptoms, a partner has tested positive or you are worried about a recent exposure, book a GP-led appointment rather than waiting.

What sample do I need for a chlamydia test?

The right sample depends on the type of exposure. A urine sample or genital swab tests the genital area; throat and rectal swabs test those sites separately. If you are unsure which sites to test, book GP-led testing.

What happens if my chlamydia test is positive?

A GP will explain your result and can usually prescribe antibiotics. They'll talk to you about letting recent partners know and advise whether you need to test again.

Can you have chlamydia without symptoms?

Yes. Most people with chlamydia have no symptoms, so routine testing can detect an infection you may not otherwise know about. If you have symptoms or need clinical advice, book GP-led testing.

Can chlamydia affect fertility?

It can if it's left untreated. Chlamydia can spread and cause pelvic inflammatory disease, which can affect fertility and increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy. Prompt testing and treatment is the best way to reduce this risk.

How quickly will I get my chlamydia test result?

Selected tests at DocTap clinics with on-site laboratories have results within 4 hours of the sample being taken, or the test fee is refunded. At our other clinics, most standard results are ready by 6pm the next working day.

Do I need a GP appointment for a chlamydia test?

No, not always. If you have no symptoms and know you want routine testing, you can book a healthcare assistant-led chlamydia and gonorrhoea test directly at one of our five clinics with on-site laboratories. If you have symptoms, a recent exposure, a partner has tested positive or you are unsure which sample sites to test, book a GP-led appointment instead.
