Questions about seeing a doctor while visiting London

Can a visitor see a GP in the UK?

Yes. If you're visiting London, you can book a private GP appointment with DocTap. You pay for your private care directly and do not need to register with an NHS GP first.

What if I've forgotten or run out of my medication?

Book a GP appointment and bring the name, dose, packaging, prescription details or other evidence of your usual medication if you have it. The GP can assess your situation and advise whether a private prescription is appropriate. Some medicines have additional prescribing restrictions.

Can I get a fit-to-fly certificate in London?

Yes, where clinically appropriate. Fit-to-fly assessments require an in-person clinic appointment so the GP can assess you before deciding whether a certificate can be issued. Bring any specific requirements from your airline or travel provider.

Could I have a video appointment from my hotel?

Video GP appointments are available while you are in the UK. Some concerns require examination in a clinic, and fit-to-fly assessments require a clinic appointment. If you need interpretation, choose 15 minutes for video or 25 minutes in clinic. Contact patient support if you are unsure which service to book.

How much does it cost to see a doctor in London?

DocTap private GP appointments currently start from £75 for a weekday clinic consultation and £55 for a weekday video appointment. Weekend and longer appointments cost more, and you'll see the price before you book.

When should I use NHS 111 or call 999 instead?

DocTap is not an emergency service. Call 999 if someone is seriously ill or injured and their life may be at risk. Call 111 if you urgently need medical help or advice but it is not life-threatening, or if you're unsure which NHS service you need.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Bring identification and, where relevant, medication names and doses, prescription details, allergy information and useful medical records. You can use your hotel or other London accommodation as your local address when booking.

Do I need an NHS number or an NHS GP?

An NHS number is not requested in our booking form. You can book a private appointment without transferring your care from your doctor at home.

What can I give my travel insurer?

You can download an invoice from your DocTap account. We can complete insurer forms for an additional £50, separate from your consultation fee. You pay upfront and submit your own claim; your insurer decides whether it is covered.

Can I get a prescription as a tourist in London?

A DocTap GP can issue a private prescription when clinically appropriate following an assessment. What can be prescribed depends on the medicine, your medical history and the GP's clinical judgement.

Can DocTap arrange tests while I'm visiting London?

Yes. Five DocTap clinics have on-site laboratories and many other tests can also be arranged. Tell your GP when you plan to leave London so they can consider result times and any follow-up you may need.

Can tourists use NHS healthcare in England?

Visitors can access NHS services, although whether treatment is free or charged depends on the service and the visitor's circumstances. DocTap is a private healthcare provider, so DocTap's published private fees apply regardless of NHS eligibility.

Do tourists get free healthcare in the UK?

Some NHS services are free to everyone, while other treatment may be chargeable depending on your circumstances. Travel or medical insurance may cover private treatment depending on your policy. DocTap itself is a private service and charges its published fees.

Can I book for my child?

For children under 16, bring the child’s passport or birth certificate and the accompanying adult’s ID. If the adult is not the parent or legal guardian, bring a signed permission letter from the parent or guardian. Contact patient support before booking if you need help choosing the appointment or meeting these requirements.

Can I get a same-day doctor appointment in London?

Same-day appointments are often available, subject to availability. Check live appointment times across our London clinics or choose a video GP appointment while you're in the UK.

Can I get a medical letter for my airline or travel insurer?

Depending on what is required and the outcome of your assessment, a GP may be able to provide medical documentation for an airline, insurer, onward care or a travel claim. Bring the organisation's requirements with you if possible.
