A sick note, also called a fit note, Med 3 certificate, or Statement of Fitness for Work, is an official document issued by a GP or other approved healthcare professional when you’ve been ill for more than seven consecutive days. It confirms whether you are “not fit for work” or “may be fit for work” with adjustments such as reduced hours or lighter duties.
A fit note is issued after a short Fit for Work assessment, either in person or online. With DocTap, a GMC-registered GP reviews your symptoms, asks about how your condition affects your work, and if appropriate, provides a same-day sick note uploaded securely to your DocTap account.
Statement of Fitness for Work
You need a sick note if you’re off work for more than seven consecutive calendar days, including weekends and bank holidays. After this point, most employers require medical evidence to approve your absence and process Statutory Sick Pay (SSP).

Getting a Sick Note UK

A fit note is issued after a GP or healthcare professional assesses your fitness for work. If your doctor decides you’re unwell enough that it impacts your work, they can issue a fit note advising one of two things:
~ You are not fit for work: you need time off to recover.
~ You may be fit for work: you could return with temporary adjustments.
If your GP selects “may be fit for work,” they’ll outline suggestions that can help you return safely. If you have ongoing or new health issues after your fit note ends, you may need a separate work adjustment letter. This can be issued by a DocTap GP after a short consultation, either online or in person, however in-clinic is recommended if a physical examination may be needed.

Typically, a doctor will issue a sick note for no longer than one month, after which a review is required. Following this review, the doctor may extend the sick note for up to a maximum of three months, depending on your clinical needs.
Your doctor may be able to provide a sick note or medical letter over a video consultation but we recommend booking a clinic appointment for sick notes or medical letter requests, as your doctor may need to perform an in person examination to assess your condition.
We cannot extend a sick note that has been issued by another provider. We can issue you with a new sick note if you book an appointment with one of our GPs.
Typically, a sick note cannot be backdated. In rare cases a sick note might be backdated if your doctor deems it clinically appropriate. If you would like to enquire about backdating a sick note please contact us on support@doctap.co.uk or 02071833254.
If you have had a clinic appointment your doctor will give you a hard copy of your sick note during your appointment. Whether you have a video or face to face appointment you'll also receive an electronic copy of your sick note that you can access in your DocTap account shortly after your consultation.
DocTap’s GMC-registered GPs provide same-day fit notes for work and study, available by appointment online or at any of our central London clinics.
