What is a sick note for work?
A sick note is the everyday name for a fit note. Its official name is a Statement of Fitness for Work, often called a Med 3. It explains how a health condition affects your ability to work. At DocTap, a GMC-registered GP can issue one after an online or clinic appointment.
When do you need a fit note for work?
You can usually self-certify for the first seven calendar days you are off work, so you do not need a fit note from a doctor. If you are unwell for longer than seven days, your employer may ask you for a fit note.
What can a fit note say?
Not fit for work — your doctor advises that you are not currently able to work because of your health condition.
May be fit for work — your doctor may suggest changes that could help you return, such as reduced hours, altered duties or workplace adjustments.

- Can DocTap renew a sick note originally issued by the NHS?
We cannot extend a sick note that has been issued by another provider. We can issue you with a new sick note if you book an appointment with one of our GPs.
- When and how will I receive my sick note?
If you have had a clinic appointment your doctor will give you a hard copy of your sick note during your appointment. Whether you have a video or face to face appointment you'll also receive an electronic copy of your sick note that you can access in your DocTap account shortly after your consultation.
