Flucloxacillin is an a type of antibiotic and belongs to the Penicillin family.

It is a commonly used antibiotic and is often used to treat skin and wound infections. It can also be used to treat some chest infections (pneumonia), bone infections and ears infections.

It acts to kill the bacteria that area causing the infection.

The dosage may vary depending on the severity of the infection being treated. Usually one or two tablets are taken four times a day to complete a course of 7-10 days.

The commonest side effect is nausea or diarrhoea.

More serious side effects include causing irritation of the liver. Therefore if you already have liver problems if is important you let your doctor know if they are prescribing you antibiotics.

Do not take flucloxacillin if you are allergic to penicillin.

It is best to take flucloxacillin on an empty stomach to maximise how much of the medication is absorbed into your system.

Avoid stopping the tablets before you have finished the course - it is important to complete the course that you are prescribed unless you are experiencing problems with the tablets.

Drinking alcohol will not affect Flucloxacillin.

Flucloxacillin can be taken by pregnant women.

Flucloxacillin can be taken by women who are breastfeeding. It is an antibiotic that is often used to treat mastitis which is a common infection in breastfeeding women.
