Blood test type

Cholesterol blood test

A cholesterol blood test checks blood fats such as cholesterol and triglycerides to help assess heart and blood vessel risk.

What this test checks

Cholesterol and blood fats

A cholesterol blood test measures fats in your blood that help your GP assess heart and blood vessel risk. Results are interpreted alongside your age, blood pressure, medical history and other risk factors.

Total cholesterol
The overall amount of cholesterol in your blood. This gives a broad starting point, but it is not interpreted on its own.
LDL cholesterol
Often called “bad” cholesterol, LDL can contribute to fatty deposits in blood vessels when levels are raised.
HDL cholesterol
Often called “good” cholesterol, HDL helps carry cholesterol away from blood vessels and is part of your risk picture.
Non-HDL cholesterol
A useful measure of the cholesterol types most linked with cardiovascular risk.
Triglycerides
Another type of blood fat that can rise with diet, alcohol, diabetes, weight changes or genetic factors.
Cholesterol ratio
Compares different cholesterol measures to help your GP understand the balance of blood fats.
Risk context
Your GP reviews the numbers alongside symptoms, family history, medication and wider heart-health risk.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fast before a cholesterol blood test?

Usually no. Most cholesterol blood tests can be done without fasting. Your GP will let you know if fasting is needed for your situation.

How quickly will I get my cholesterol blood test results?

If your cholesterol markers are checked as part of Test & Treat at an on-site lab clinic, key results can be reviewed with your GP during the same appointment. For a standalone GP blood test appointment, results are usually reported after the visit and timing can vary by clinic and test route.
